Emily Norcross Dickinson

Emily Norcross Dickinson, like her husband, was also one of nine children. She was born July 3, 1804 and grew up in Monson, Massachusetts. She attended Monson accademy from age seven to nineteen, and then boarding school for a term in New Haven, Connecticut.

In 1826 she and Edward Norcross began their courtship  Emily didn’t care much for writing though, unlike her future husband and daughter. Instead she was more interested in housekeeping and was complimented for her cooking. So when her children were born she focused mainly on household duties and gardening.

Later in life she suffered from depression, and had a stroke in 1874. After the stroke her daughters helped take care of their mother until her death on November 14, 1882.dickinson_emily_norcross_1804-1882_head_medium
